Science News: Oldest evidence of life on Earth found in Canada

– G.A., Senior Editor

A fundamental issue that humans have pondered for thousands of years is how and when life on Earth first began. In September, a research team led by Dr. Tsuyoshi Komiya of the University of Tokyo published important findings that have helped to clarify how long life has existed on Earth.

Studying samples of ancient rocks located in Labrador, Canada, the researchers discovered traces of an organic material that was created by organisms that lived at least 3.95 billion years ago. The researchers’ findings were published as a letter in the September issue of Nature.

While the identity of the organism or organisms that produced the traces of organic material in these ancient rocks remains unknown, the researchers will continue to investigate the content of the rocks for clues. Regardless of the physical characteristics of these organisms, given that they were alive so early in the history of our planet, they represent the first link in the chain of life that leads to the amazing biodiversity on Earth today.

With the findings of this research team potentially pushing the appearance of life on Earth even closer to the actual formation of Earth itself, it appears that life was able to appear and survive during a very tumultuous period in our planet’s history. With the knowledge that life appeared under such difficult conditions, we must be more vigilant about preserving all forms of life that exist today.
